100 to Watch: Daniel W. Hynes Comptroller, Illinois
Background: Health care attorney.
Why I got into public service: I was raised by very civic-minded parents who taught me to believe that politics and government are noble pursuits. As a young adult, I was often disheartened at the way public service was portrayed and that the public had such a cynical view of elected officials. One of my generation's greatest challenges and responsibilities is to overcome skepticism about politics and government and inspire a new generation of activists in public life. I entered public service to meet that challenge.
Guiding Value: Responsibility to your family, your country, your generation, your constituency. As an elected official, if you internalize your responsibility to those who elected you and let that responsibility guide your actions every day above everything else, you will never regret the decisions you make.
