100 to Watch: Kwame Kilpatrick Mayor of Detroit, Mich.
Background: State legislator.
Why I got into public service: I come from a long family history of community service. My parents and grandparents were all public servants. Combined, they have been letter carriers, schoolteachers, a county commissioner, state representative, and member of congress. My parents raised me and my siblings on the principle that, "Service is the rent you pay for the space you occupy."
Top Issue: Revitalizing the city of Detroit by providing a safe learning environment for Detroit's children, creating safe streets through the restructuring of the police department, and physically cleaning and beautifying Detroit.
#1 Rule of Politics: Engage the process. There is always a solution waiting to happen with every issue. As long as those engaging the process are committed to resolving an issue, the solution will be there.
