New Dem of the Week: Michael Coleman
Mayor of Columbus, Ohio


As he enters his second term, Mayor, Michael B. Coleman continues to focus on clear neighborhood priorities and is getting results in his effort to build Columbus as America's 21st Century City. Committed to improving the safety and quality of life in neighborhoods, building a more vibrant downtown, creating and retaining jobs, and building partnerships to solve community challenges, the Mayor is clearly taking strides toward making Columbus the best city in the nation to live, work and raise a family.

Some top accomplishments of his tenure include: the creation of the Cap City Kids after-school program, which now serves 3,000 children, driving investment to create more than 5,800 new neighborhood homes and 2,800 new downtown housing units, engaging financial institutions to commit $3.5 billion in capital for urban redevelopment, and efforts to bring thousands of jobs to Columbus.

Mayor Michael B. Coleman took office on January 1, 2000. Prior to becoming mayor, Coleman served as President of Columbus City Council from 1/6/97-11/29/99, and as a Council member from 2/3/92-12/31/99.

Michael Coleman graduated from the University of Cincinnati in 1977, and earned his law degree from the University of Dayton Law School in 1980. In addition to his record of public service and plans for Columbus future, Mayor Coleman is married to Frankie Coleman, and they have three children, Kimberly, Justin and John-David. Michael B. Coleman was born on November 18, 1954, he and his family live on Columbus east side.
