Senator Kent Conrad said today the selection of Senator Joe Lieberman as a candidate for Vice President is an outstanding choice.

"I know Senator Lieberman very well because he sat between Senator Dorgan and me on the floor of the U.S. Senate for several years. He is exceptional. He is a man of strong moral values.

"He was the lead cosponsor of my legislation to provide the V-Chip in television sets so parents can help control what their kids see. He has been a key ally in getting our fiscal house in order, which has helped produce the longest economic expansion in our nation's history.

"He has a wonderful sense of humor and has been a real friend to North Dakota. He was an early supporter of our attempt to secure disaster assistance when we were hit by the floods of 1997 and the farm crisis of the last three years.

"I've also worked with him on the Centrist Coalition, which is a group of moderate Democratic and Republican senators who work together on balancing the budget and providing for improved health care.

"I count Joe Lieberman as a close friend and strongly support his selection as the Vice Presidential candidate on the Democratic ticket."
