In a special edition of its Blueprint policy journal, the DLC examines why Vice President Gore, despite unprecedented peace and prosperity, a president of his own party with historically high job approval ratings, and all the advantages of incumbency, ultimately lost the 2000 election.
The special issue, entitled "Why Gore Lost, And How Democrats Can Come Back," features a post-election poll conducted by pollster Mark Penn and analysis by DLC CEO Al From, Progressive Policy Institute President Will Marshall, and Representative Adam Smith (WA-9th).
The DLC hosted a discussion forum at the National Press Club on January 24 at the release event for the magazine.
Participants included Al From, Will Marshall, Rep. Smith; Steve Rosenthal, Director of the Political Department of the AFL-CIO; Dr. William A. Galston, Professor of Public Affairs at the University of Maryland; and Ruy Teixeira, author of The Forgotten Majority and Senior Fellow at the Century Foundation.
